The 30-second answer: Briggs & Stratton engines power a huge share of generators sold under other brand names, so the fixes are the same familiar ones. Won’t start after sitting: stale fuel and a gummed carb — B&S’s small jets clog fast on ethanol gas. Runs then dies: check the fuel shutoff solenoid, a common failure point on B&S-powered units. Low-oil shutdown that won’t clear: the float-type sensor sticks — check it’s actually reading correctly, not just topping off oil.
Briggs & Stratton doesn’t just make generators under its own name — its engines show up inside plenty of other brands’ portable and standby units too, so if your generator has a B&S engine badge under the shroud, these are the issues I see most.
Won’t start after sitting
Same story as any small engine: ethanol gas gums up the tiny carburetor jets within a couple of months of sitting. Drain the old fuel, pull the carb bowl, clean the jet with carb cleaner and a strand of wire if it’s clogged, and refill with fresh gas. B&S’s engines are otherwise reliable, so stale fuel is the cause the large majority of the time.
Runs, then dies a few seconds later
This points at the fuel shutoff solenoid — a small electric valve at the base of the carburetor that’s supposed to stay open while the engine runs. On many B&S engines, this solenoid fails in the closed position after enough hours or corrosion, so the engine starts on the fuel already in the bowl, then dies the moment it needs more. Test it by listening for a click when you turn the key or pull the cord — no click, or a solenoid that stays retracted, means it needs replacing ($15–30, straightforward swap).
Low-oil shutdown with oil that’s actually full
B&S uses a float-style low-oil sensor in most of its engines, and that float can stick in the “low” position from old, sludgy oil or simply age. Confirm the oil is genuinely at the correct level on flat ground, then if the light still trips, the sensor itself has failed — it’s a $10–20 part threaded into the crankcase, and a common enough failure that it’s worth checking before assuming a bigger problem.
Hard starting when cold
B&S small engines are choke-sensitive in cold weather more than most. Make sure the choke is fully engaged for the first pull attempts, and don’t rush to open it — give the engine a few seconds of choked running before backing it off gradually. If it’s still fighting you cold even with correct choke technique, check spark plug gap (should be around .030″), since a slightly wide gap struggles more in cold-start conditions.
