
Not every generator has a fuel pump, and that trips people up. If your tank sits above the carburetor, gravity does the work and there is no pump to fail. But plenty of machines — ones with the tank low or off to the side, most larger units, and anything with fuel injection — use a pump, and when it quits the engine starves. I have had more than one “won’t stay running” generator turn out to be a two-dollar diaphragm in a generator fuel pump. Here is how to test one instead of guessing.
First figure out which kind of pump you have, because the test is different for each.
The 30-second answer: If a generator with a fuel pump starts on the primer shot and then dies, or starves under load, the pump is not moving enough fuel. A pulse (vacuum) pump runs off crankcase pressure through a small pulse line — a cracked pulse line or a torn diaphragm kills it. An electric pump should hum and click when the switch is on. Disconnect the outlet line into a clear container and crank: you should see steady fuel. No flow means a bad pump, a cracked pulse line, or a plugged inlet screen.
Which pump do you have?
Two kinds show up on generators. The pulse (vacuum) pump is the common one on gas portables: a small plastic or metal box with three lines — fuel in, fuel out, and a thin pulse line that taps into the crankcase. The engine’s pressure pulses flex a diaphragm and push fuel along. The electric pump shows up on inverter and EFI units and larger machines; it is a 12-volt pump that runs when the key or run switch is on. Trace your fuel line from the tank and you will land on one or the other, or on nothing at all if the machine is gravity-fed.
Testing a pulse (vacuum) pump
With fuel in the tank and the valve open, pull the outlet line off the pump and put it into a clear bottle. Crank the engine (or run it if it will stay running a few seconds). A healthy pulse pump delivers steady spurts of fuel with each engine revolution. If you get nothing or a weak dribble, check three things in order: the pulse line for cracks or a loose fitting (no pulse signal, no pumping), the inlet screen for gum, and the diaphragm inside. Most of these pumps are sealed and cheap enough that I replace rather than rebuild once the diaphragm is suspect.
Testing an electric pump
Turn the run switch or key on without starting. You should hear the pump prime — a short hum or buzz that settles down. Silence means no power or a dead pump. Check for 12 volts at the pump connector with a meter; if the voltage is there and the pump is silent, the pump is done. If there is no voltage, chase the fuse, the relay, and the safety circuit before condemning the pump. Then do the same clear-bottle flow test to confirm it actually moves fuel, not just makes noise.
The things that mimic a bad pump
Before you buy a pump, rule out the cheap stuff: a plugged tank vent (creates a vacuum that starves the carb and looks like weak pumping — loosen the cap and see if it improves), a clogged inlet screen or fuel filter, a kinked line, and stale fuel gumming everything downstream. A pump can only move fuel that can get to it.
Replacing the pump
Match the new pump to the old one — for pulse pumps, the port arrangement and flow rating matter; for electric, the voltage and pressure. Note which line goes where before you pull it (a photo helps), route the new lines with fresh clamps, and make sure the pulse line seats fully. Prime it, run it, and load it to confirm it no longer starves.

A shop charges $75–150 to diagnose a fuel-delivery problem plus the pump and labor to swap it — call it $150–250 for what is often a $15 part and half an hour. Testing and replacing a fuel pump is squarely DIY. The exception is a fuel-injected generator with a failed high-pressure pump or injector, where the diagnostics justify a pro.
